Custom kitchen cabinets rarely wear out all at once. Finishes dull where hands reach for the same door every day, edges swell beside the dishwasher, and a drawer starts to drag months before anyone notices. Most of that wear is preventable, and the right approach depends on what your cabinets are made of, how they are finished, and the conditions they live in.

Start With the Care Instructions for Your Finish

Kitchen Cabinet Maintenance: Caring for Your Custom Cabinets in Toronto

Identify your cabinet finish before buying a cleaner. Painted shaker doors, stained oak, wood veneer, and high-gloss lacquer can look similar across a room, yet each reacts differently to chemicals, moisture, and friction.

If your cabinetry came with care instructions from the cabinet maker or finish manufacturer, follow those over any general advice, including ours. A product labelled “safe for wood” is not automatically safe for every coating, and some can haze the surface or leave residue.

How to Clean Kitchen Cabinets Safely?

For routine cleaning, most factory-finished cabinets respond well to a soft microfibre cloth and a little mild dish soap in warm water. Technique matters as much as the solution:

  1. Wring the cloth until it is barely damp, never dripping.
  2. Wipe with the grain on solid wood and veneer.
  3. Focus on handle areas and cabinets beside the range, where grease collects fastest.
  4. Dry the surface right away with a second clean cloth.

Cooking residue comes off easily while it is fresh. Left for weeks, it bonds with dust and turns sticky, inviting harsh scrubbing. Regular wiping near the cooktop prevents that. If hardened grease remains, hold a warm, well-wrung soapy cloth on it briefly to soften the film, then wipe and dry. If that fails, follow your finish manufacturer’s guidance.

Products to avoid unless your manufacturer approves them

  • Abrasive pads, scouring powders, and the rough side of kitchen sponges
  • Ammonia- or bleach-based cleaners
  • Strong degreasers and solvent-based products
  • Vinegar, which some finishes tolerate and others do not
  • Furniture polish, silicone sprays, and wax, which can build up and interfere with future refinishing

Test anything new on a hidden spot first.

Keep Water Away From Edges and Seams

A splash wiped up promptly rarely causes harm, but moisture left to sit can damage any cabinet surface, especially edges, joints, seams, and exposed substrate beneath the finish. Once water gets in, wood can swell, edge banding on veneer or laminate panels can lift, and painted joints may crack.

The highest-risk spots are the sink base, the cabinets beside the dishwasher, and the doors under a kettle or coffee maker. A few habits help:

  • Wipe drips immediately, especially along the bottom edges of doors.
  • Wipe condensation off nearby cabinet faces after a cycle, and follow your dishwasher’s instructions on opening the door.
  • Avoid hanging damp tea towels over doors.
  • Check under the sink occasionally for slow leaks.
  • Run the range hood while cooking to reduce grease and steam.

Managing Humidity Through Toronto’s Seasons

Across the GTA, indoor air tends to be drier during the heating season and more humid in summer, and solid wood expands and contracts slightly as conditions change. Fine winter lines where a painted door panel meets its frame often come from solid wood shrinking in dry air, but not every crack is seasonal. Have it inspected if it widens, spreads into the finish, or appears with swelling or peeling.

No single humidity setting suits every home; some manufacturers specify a recommended indoor range, so check your documentation. Aim to avoid extreme swings: a humidifier in winter and air conditioning or a dehumidifier in summer keep conditions steadier.

Sunlight works more slowly. Natural wood and some stains can change colour with prolonged exposure, so blinds or UV-filtering film may help.

Caring for Hinges and Drawer Glides

Soft-close hinges and drawer glides need little attention. Clear crumbs from drawer runners, avoid overloading drawers, and skip lubricants unless the hardware manufacturer recommends them, since they can attract dust.

If a door sits slightly out of line, most concealed hinges have adjustment screws, and a small turn can correct the gap. Stop and get help if a screw keeps loosening, a hinge pulls away from the cabinet, a soft-close mechanism fails, or a drawer box separates.

Signs a Problem Needs Professional Assessment

  • Swelling or soft spots around the sink
  • Lifting edge banding
  • Finish damage that exposes bare wood
  • Recurring alignment problems can point to moisture or structural issues.

DIY sanding or repainting over an unknown finish can make a repair costlier. If your cabinets are under warranty, read the terms before attempting any fix.
